Although most of us no longer rely on our fireplaces for warmth, the hearth is one of the hottest elements of interior design today — the true focal point of many rooms.

30 years ago, if you wanted a fireplace set into a wall of flagstone rock, the rock had to be brought in and set. If the wall was 12 feet high by 6 feet wide, it involved a lot of flagstone. Today, decorative concrete can be used in conjunction with hand carving to create a wall that looks the same, but at a better price, custom look and feel and a fast and long-lasting process.

And in fact, we have a quick and easy way to make a fake fireplace with little time. do you want to have a try?

1. Have an MDF case made for your fireplace. This is basically a box with an opening in the front for the fire. Don’t make the box deeper than you have to and make sure the hole in the front will fit your fire. If you draw out the measurements before hand, you can get the hardware store to cut the MDF into the right sizes for you before you leave.
 

2. When you get home, assemble your box using either a good wood glue or screws.

3. Don’t forget that you can line the opening of your fireplace to give it a more finished look. For this you will need a few extra pieces of MDF to make a fake fireplace look more authentic.

4. Check to make sure that your fake fireplace fits into the fireplace. Alternatively, if you do not have a fake fire such as an electric fire, then you can leave the hole empty or just put some wood or coal in there for decorative effect.

5. Mark the positions where you need to drill holes for the outlets on your fake fireplace. By pre-drilling these holes you’ll save yourself a lot of hassle later on.
 
6. When the unit is ready and you are happy that you electric unit fits in the fireplace you can seal the MDF with black Gusso. Make sure you seal all surfaces that are visible when you make a fake fireplace. Apply a layer thick enough so that you only need one coat and texture it smoothly.

7. You can now sponge the Gusso with grey paint to create the granite look. This can be done over the entire fireplace or just blocks. If you decide to limit the effect to blocks then mark off your blocks with masking tape before sponging.

8. Place the sponge in grey paint, dab it on some paper to eliminate excess paint, and then dab the paint on to the Gusso to create a rich granite texture.  You had no idea it was so simple to make a fake fireplace, did you!
